The Aragonese branch of the Camino de Santiago flourished during the Middle Ages, between the 11th and 16th centuries. Starting at Somport Pass at 1,640 meters, this historic route crosses the Pyrenees and descends through the Aragón Valley. From high peaks to open plains, its peaceful atmosphere and stunning landscapes give the journey a unique magic.
Walking the Camino de Santiago through Aragón offers a rich blend of history, culture, and nature.The route begins in the Pyrenees at Somport Pass and descends into the beautiful Aragón Valley. Pilgrims start near Canfranc, famous for its impressive international railway station.
The landscape shifts from dramatic mountain scenery to gentler hills and fertile plains. One of the first major stops is Jaca, a historic town known for its Romanesque cathedral and medieval heritage. Pilgrims can also enjoy regional products such as cheeses, cured meats, and Aragonese wines.
Hospitality along the way reflects the deep-rooted pilgrimage tradition of the region. The peaceful surroundings make this stretch less crowded than other parts of the Camino.
Finally, the Aragonese route joins the main Camino Francés in Puente la Reina.From there, pilgrims continue westward toward Santiago on one of Europe’s most iconic routes.
